A NARROW win for ZPC Kariba against Caps United at White City Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday handed the former a third placing in this year’s edition of the Independence Cup.
It was sweet revenge for ZPC Kariba over a team that denied them the PSL League title last season.
And yesterday there was action galore at a packed White City Stadium, and it was Caps who nearly grabbed an early initiative but a Gerald Phiri strike, from a promising position, went over the bar barely two minutes into play.
The first ZPC Kariba chance came in the 27th minute when the goalkeeper denied Samuel Makawa from just outside the box. In the 58th minute, the ZPC Kariba technical department made two tactical changes which saw one of the substitutes, Pride Tafirenyika, scoring the only goal of the match a minute after he was introduced.
Desperate for an equaliser, the Caps United technical department introduced three players Takudzwa Mahori, Tinovimba Musekwe and the 18-year-old Blessing Nyamuzihwa, but the move yielded no nothing. Both sides fielded virtually unrecognised players as they apparently rested their regulars ahead of their showdown in a league match next weekend.
Saul Chaminuka was impressed by the performance of his side saying he wanted something out of the game and his boys delivered.
“The boys played very well. As a team we had talked about getting something out of the game and that’s what we did exactly,” said Chaminuka.
Despite the loss, the Green Machine coach Mark Harrison applauded his players for a good performance saying Caps United would be the best side in the next three years.
