The Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, who was accompanied by his deputy minister Aldry Musiiwa, has expressed satisfaction at the work that is being done at the Zvishavane District Hospital after a tour last week.

His visit to the hospital came in line with his two- day visit to the Midlands Province. He also hailed the hospital staff for being able to work with the corporate world like Mimosa Mining Company which over the years has managed to build a mortuary; a laundry room as well as a durawall that surrounds the hospital premises.

“Mimosa has done a great job here. It’s really commendable. The renovations done here from the theatre, mortuary and tiling are huge. This is what we are looking for. We can’t ask for less or for more. They are on the right track and we really want to appreciate and thank them. Their management, their workforce and just the collaboration with us has been phenomenally exemplary. I am not exactly sure yet on how much in terms of monetary value they have invested here,” said Dr Parirenyatwa.

Addressing delegates, the minister also praised the maternity wing at the hospital, adding that the administration of the hospital has also been impressive.

“I am very pleased with the fact that the hospital has managed to have zero maternal deaths despite the fact that the fact that most of the babies in the district are delivered at this hospital. This hospital is probably the best in the Province and other hospitals should learn from this but however, the staff should do more in order to continue providing good service delivery.”

Member of Parliament for Zvishavane Ngezi constituency John Holder who was present at the tour also hailed the minister’s visit to the hospital.

“I am very happy with minister’s visit at our hospital as this shows that he has the welfare of the people at heart but the hospital has a problem that when it receives equipment it stays in boxes instead of being installed and used and I hope this will end since the minister has stepped in,” said Holder.

However, the hospital has some critical posts that need to be filled like the x-ray section where the is no qualified radiographer. The hospital also does not have a lab scientist.

Among other challenges Zvishavane District hospital is receiving inadequate blood coupons, a situation that is forcing them to buy blood at $135 per unit.
