A devastating road accident occurred on Sunday morning along the Harare-Bulawayo highway, resulting in the loss of seven lives.
The tragic incident involved an Inter Africa bus colliding with a stationary truck at around 03:30 am. According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the bus rammed into the rear of the truck, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos.
Villagers living near the highway reportedly looted goods on the broken down truck.
The accident has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, with many expressing condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
The Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) president, Tafadzwa Goliath, mourned the loss of life and urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected. We urge everyone to exercise caution on the roads and to follow all safety guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future,” Goliath said.
The ZRP has warned the public, especially communities along highways, that taking advantage of a road traffic accident to loot or steal goods is a serious criminal offense. The police are still assessing the total number of injured victims and have taken the bodies of the deceased to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly during the festive season when many people are traveling.
As the nation mourns the loss of life, it is essential that we prioritize road safety and take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents in the future.
The ZRP and other stakeholders must continue to raise awareness about road safety and work towards reducing the number of accidents on our roads.
