The election of the Minister of Sports and Recreation Kirsty Coventry to be the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been described as an exhibition of the spirit of determination and excellence that the country stands for.
In a congratulatory message by the acting president General (Rtd) Constantino Chiwenga said Minister Coventry’s illustrious career has inspired countless Zimbabweans and athletes around the world through her dedication and unparalleled achievements.
“This is not just a personal triumph; it is also a moment of immense pride for our country. Your journey from a talented swimmer to becoming the first woman and first African to be elected President of the International Olympic Committee exemplifies the spirit of determination and excellence that our country stands for,” said Gen (Rtd) Chiwenga.
He said Minister Coventry’s career punctuated by a legacy of success made it an easy decision for President Mnangagwa to appoint her as Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
“Your extensive experience and profound knowledge of the sporting world have made significant impact on our national sports agenda and your new role at the International Olympic Committee is testament to your capabilities and vision.
“As you step into this influential position, I urge you to continue to represent our values and aspirations on the global stage. The role of International Olympic Committee President carries with it immense responsibilities and I have every confidence that you will advocate for the growth and development of sports worldwide, fostering inclusivity and excellence in every discipline,” said Gen (Rtd) Chiwenga.
He assured her that the Government of Zimbabwe stands firmly behind her as she embarks on this important journey.
