ANNUAL National Sports Awards (ANSA) Junior Sportsman of the Year nominee, Denilson Cyprianos has described making it into the list a confidence booster that will propel him to do better.

The Stingrays Swimming Academy swimmer said he did not expect to make it into the nominations list and was shocked when he saw his name among the nominees.

“It is certainly a confidence booster to be in the top three nationally among young sportsman, I’m delighted with the recognition as in most cases, I just get medals for my efforts and it ends there but to be recognised beyond swimming is really great,” he said.

Cyprianos (17) was nominated alongside Matthew Antony Denslow (Triathlon) Emmanuel Bako (Motorsport) and the winner is going to be announced at the awards ceremony scheduled for Wednesday in Harare.

The Christian Brothers College headboy said it feels good that his hard work is finally being rewarded but he will continue and persevere to achieve more.

“I didn’t expect to be nominated and was hoping my efforts will pay off in the end like heading to the Olympics but I’m glad it paid off now. I will continue training hard as I have been and I will not stop until I become the best,” he said.

Cyprianos attributed his achievements to his coach and father, Eddy whom he said is the biggest factor in his success.

“My coach works day and night with me to make me a better swimmer and luckily my coach is also my dad and he is the one who pushes me to believe in myself to be a better version of me both in and out of the pool and I think he is the biggest factor in all of this success,” he said.

The 200m and 100m backstroke national record holder said winning will be an icing on the cake as being nominated was good enough, adding he has competed with Denslow previously in swimming while playing water polo together and will be delighted to meet up with him again.

Cyprianos represented Zimbabwe at the Fina World Junior Swimming Championships that were held in Budapest last year where he broke the 100m backstroke national open record (58,27 seconds) and he broke the record again last month in South Africa in a time of 57,60 seconds.

He also broke the 200m backstroke twice last year initially completing the race in two minutes 08,64 seconds in March before swimming the distance in two minutes 05:62 last month in South Africa.
