HIGHLANDERS committee member aspirant, Mgcini Mafu believes lack of a club-initiated membership drive has led to fewer supporters joining the club and coming up with a recruitment drive will be his main forte if elected to the post.

Mafu (52) has thrown his name into the ring for the post of committee member that would be left vacant when Wisdom Mabhena’s second term comes to an end at the end of this month.

He said his focus will be doing a massive recruitment membership drive with a target of 300 members during his tenure.

Mafu said having been part of the Highlanders Hwange Chapter he worked with Liqhwa Gama in mobilising membership and raising funds for the club.

“I have worked for the club in various capacities and also making contributions although it is not something that I would talk about. In Hwange we used to raise funds for the club and when I came to Bulawayo as part of Heart and Soul Supporters Chapter, we were donating food whenever the team had a home game.

“Gama taught me that the committee member is the main link between the administration and supporters and I believe that would be my main job if elected to the post,” he said.

Mafu, who runs a motor oil lubricants retail shop, said he believes there is a lack of new members joining the club and it is a worrying trend that should be stemmed.

He said hooliganism will also be on his radar and during trips to away games, he interacts with those who mainly occupy the Soweto stand hence it will be easy to engage them on the issue.

Mafu said he cannot promise to bring sponsorship since that is not his duty alone.

“I can’t say if I get elected, I will do this and that when I know it is not my duty. Other members of the executive will be doing their efforts and I won’t interfere with that. I will remain the link with supporters and encourage them to be members,” he said.
