MORE than 300 farmers from Matabeleland South have been registered to benefit from an agro-yield programme launched by leading financial institution, CBZ as part of supporting this year’s agriculture season.

In an interview last week, Matabeleland South provincial agronomist Mr Innocent Nyathi said registered farmers were  waiting to collect their inputs.

“More than 300 farmers from the province have registered with CBZ and are ready to collect their inputs and benefit from agro-yield. The process is just a one-day thing and after that if the farmers are successful, they can collect the desired inputs from the suppliers and Grain Marketing Board,” said Mr Nyathi.

Bulawayo CBZ credit analyst Mr Ashington Ndlovu urged more farmers from all provinces to register saying the programme comes with benefits.

“I urge all the farmers to approach us and open bank accounts so that they can register to get the funding which by far will be a boost to their farming projects. We started the project in October seeing that we have a role to play in reviving the economy and through taking part in such programmes, we want to make sure that the agriculture sector blooms, we hope the economy to revive,” said Mr Ndlovu although he could not reveal how much the package was worth.

The farmers are set to be assisted through seed inputs and fertilisers, chemicals, fuel among other services.

“So far there has been a good response from Matabeleland North Province farmers especially those in Umguza District. The funding is set to support productive farmers and also encourage other farmers nationwide to follow suite for them to fully utilise the agro-yield programme if they want a successful farming season as the rains are about to come,” he said.

The country expects to receive normal rains with a bias towards below normal throughout the 2019/20 season.
