ZANU-PF Politburo member and renowned educationist Dr Sikhanyiso Duke Ndlovu has died.
He was 78.
Dr Ndlovu passed away Tuesday morning at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo, where he had been admitted for the past two of weeks after suffering a stroke.
Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial chairperson, Cde Dennis Ndlovu confirmed the liberation war stalwart’s death revealing that they had already convened an urgent meeting to discuss the matter so as to forward a National Hero Status recommendation to the Politburo.
“The province and the nation are in mourning after the death of Dr Ndlovu. As we speak we are meeting as a province, to compile his biography, which we will forward to the Politburo.
“He was a man whose works speak for themselves, he had a passion for education and it is our hope that he qualifies for national hero status,” said Cde Ndlovu.
Previously Dr Ndlovu, who was also known as the Duke of Mpopoma, has held the then Ministry of Information and Publicity portfolio; he was also a Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education. At one point he was the Zanu-PF Secretary for Education.
Dr Ndlovu was also in the forefront of the establishment of the Zimbabwe Open University.
He also founded Zimbabwe Distance Education College (ZDECO). He was also the patron of the Zimbabwe National Army schools and welfare trust.
Dr Ndlovu is survived by his wife Dr Rose Ndlovu, three children, after the eldest Mandla passed away. He also has eight grandchildren, with one of them, Sikhanyiso (Jnr), having also passed away.
