Police in Bulawayo have warned commuter omnibus operators who are concealing their vehicle registration plates with paper to avoid being identified when committing offences that they will be arrested.
Recently, a number of commuter omnibuses, particularly those that ply high-density routes such as Magwegwe, Pelandaba and Pumula, have been operating with their back registration plates obscured by paints or inks to avoid being detected.
Residents have been complaining that commuter omnibus operators were concealing their plates to evade justice after committing various offences such as hit and run, loading at undesignated places or robberies.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube said it is an offence to conceal number plates and those found doing so will be prosecuted.
“Covering number plates is an offence and those nabbed will be prosecuted,” he said.
Insp Ncube urged the public not to board vehicles with concealed or without registration plates as they risk being robbed.
“In the same vein, members of the public are encouraged not to board such vehicles because this speaks on its own that they are criminals. These vehicles automatically show that they are not fit and suitable to be on the road,” said the police spokesperson.
