BULILIMA Rural District Council in the Matabeleland South province has started constructing a new primary school in Masendu, a development set to reduce the distance for learners.

The school, Zompata Primary is located between Nyele (Ward Four) and Masendu (Ward Seven). Bulilima RDC chief executive officer Mr John Brown Ncube said construction of the school started last year and the target was to complete it around June this year.

“We started this project in 2019 first quarter and we are still in the process of building, so far we have managed to finish building the teachers’ cottages and the first classroom block is still in progress hoping to finish it by the end of this month,” he said.

Mr Ncube said classroom blocks would be finished by June while enrolment is expected once the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education approves.

“The school is meant to decongest existing schools around the area and we hope that the project will go a long way in addressing challenges faced by educators where you find a teacher struggling to engage with all the pupils in one classroom,” he said.

Matabeleland South acting provincial education director Mr Lifias Masukume praised the district council for engaging in such developmental projects.

“I would like to commend the councillors for their hard work especially on issues to do with making education accessible to everyone,” he said.

Mr Masukume encouraged councils to work with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education when engaging in such developments in order to construct standard buildings that are conducive for learners.
