FIFTEEN families from Njube’s E Square section yesterday received foodstuffs donated by former residents of the suburb who are now based in the United Kingdom.

The food parcels that included 10kg mealie-meal, 2kg sugar, tea leaves, 2kg flour, 1 bar of soap, a head of cabbage and two litres cooking oil were handed over to the recipients at Salukazi Arts Centre.

A representative of the donors, Mr Matesu Dube said the former residents felt compelled to give back to the community they grew up in. He said the Covid-19 pandemic has brought awareness of the struggles people were facing on a daily basis.

“The donors came together and pooled 300 pounds which they committed to feeding several needy families within E square. From the funds we managed to buy parcels for 15 families,” he said.

One of the recipients, Sheila Nhliziyo expressed joy at the gesture adding it came at the right time when they were facing challenges.

“These are tough times for us the elderly as prices rise, we find it difficult to buy food. I would like to express my utter gratitude to the people who bought the food for us. I am extremely elated,” she said.

The handover was done in conjunction with the Njube E Square Family Development Association, whose representative, Mr Bruce Ngangezwe Khumalo said they were eager to engage those bringing positive developments to the area.

“We are always willing to engage with people who bring positive developments to our community and we are happy with this development especially because they have promised to continue supporting the community and ensuring all benefit from this relief. We will continue to assist with logistical support and in every way possible to ensure that their endeavour and objectives are fully met,” he said.
