A Chiredzi man has been ordered to pay US$200 or face 90 days imprisonment in in default for obstruction of justice after he pushed a police officer who was in the process of arresting a suspect wanted for a series of unlawful entry and theft cases.
According to a statement by the National Prosecution Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Tinashe Matinyarare (37), appeared before the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court facing one count of obstruction of justice.
The accused committed the offense on 17 July 2024, at Molly Street in Chiredzi.
“The accused person approached police detectives who had arrested Kudzai Kondo in connection with a series of unlawful entry and theft cases, and pushed an on-duty police officer who was in the process of putting handcuffs on the suspect, thereby disturbing the arrest,” reads the statement.
After Matinyarare pushed the police officer, the NPAZ reported that Kondo managed to escape.
“The police officers however managed to arrest the accused person (Matinyarare) who had disturbed them,” the NPAZ said
Matinyarare was sentenced to pay a US$200 fine or in default 90 days imprisonment, in addition, he was sentenced to a wholly suspended four months imprisonment.
