ACTION in the Absa Premiership will resume on 8 August for the purposes of finishing off the 2019/20 season.

In a statement sent out on Monday, the South African Premier Soccer League said its leadership met virtually and agreed on a resumption date. The date for the recommencement was announced by PSL chairman Irvin Khoza at a press conference in Johannesburg. First up on the list of matches to be played are the Nedbank Cup semifinals to be followed by the Absa Premiership and GladAfrica Championship fixtures. PSL said the dates and kick off times will be confirmed in due course.

Khoza is of the view that the announcement of the resumption date has the likelihood to bring about excitement in Mzansi amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“This announcement will assist in lifting the mood of the country and also in mitigating some of the challenges faced by our country and the global community. We have informed our stakeholders including the Minister of Sport, MEC of Sport in Gauteng, SAFA, the broadcasters SuperSport, ABSA, NedBank, GladAfrica and SAFPU about the plans. All the clubs in the PSL have made it possible in making sure they comply with the protocols,” Khoza said.

Khoza confirmed that the remainder of the season will be played in a biologically secure environment. The bio-secure setting, which is meant to be safe for all teams all the way through what remains of the season will be in Gauteng.
