ACTING Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO, Rodwell Thabe, has said the new PSL season is likely to begin on 1 March.
Thabe made the announcement during the PSL induction workshop held at a local hotel in Bulawayo on Thursday and Friday.
Seventeen clubs attended the meeting, although confirmation is still pending for the final club that will complete the 18-team line-up.

The workshop gathered all the teams expected to participate in this season’s league, providing a platform to review the previous campaign and address housekeeping matters ahead of the upcoming eight-month season.

“This is a great initiative for the PSL and its member clubs. It’s a platform for us to interact and everything has gone well. We have had time to discuss our problems and achievements, and reflect on the 2024 season while planning for 2025,” said Thabe.
Thabe touched on some of the discussions made at the induction meeting.

“We covered a lot of topics, including corporate governance, sports marketing and sponsorships. We also discussed Fifa’s club licensing system, which underpins the operations of our clubs. Other issues such as doping control and player education have also been addressed to ensure players remain in a clean state while participating in the sport,” said Thabe.

On the subject of stadia conditions, Thabe assured that the league’s venues have undergone renovations since the end of the previous season.

“We are grateful to the Government, private stakeholders and stadium owners for their efforts in improving the facilities. Maintaining these venues is not easy. We are confident that our stadiums will meet the minimum standards required for the season,” said Thabe.

Thabe also addressed the issue of the 18th team in the league, confirming that discussions with Zifa are on-going.
“I have been in communication with the General-Secretary at Zifa, and I hope we will receive confirmation on the 18th team soon. Although they were not present at the workshop, we plan to conduct a separate session with them once they are confirmed.

Dynamos

We respect the processes Zifa must follow, but I am confident we will have that team on board in time for the start of the season,” said Thabe.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Simba Bhora and Chibuku Super Cup winners Dynamos will kick off the season with the Castle Challenge Cup at Rufaro Stadium on 22 February.
