THE ruling Zanu-PF National Youth Commissar, Cde Godfrey Tsenengamu has issued a stern warning to party youths to desist from abusing the name of President Mnangagwa in corrupt activities.

Addressing party youths at a meeting at the party’s district headquarters in Kwekwe on Friday, Cde Tsenengamu said such youths were going against President Mnangagwa’s call to stop corruption.

His sentiments come in the wake of the arrest of three youths from Kwekwe who allegedly masqueraded as Central Intelligence Officers (CIO) sent by President Mnangagwa to take over a mine in Shangani, Matabeleland South Province. Gostaff Gomo (37), Isaac Makore (37) and Tichaona Chinosengwa (35) appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate facing charges of impersonating a public officer and are out on $100 bail each waiting trial. Another Bulawayo youth was arrested after using the President’s name to allegedly extort money from a Shangani miner.

Cde Tsenengamu strongly warned youths who were in the habit of using the name of the President in their illegal shenanigans to stop as it was tantamount to corruption and the party would not hesitate to crack the whip.

“There are some among us who have developed a habit of abusing the name of the President in committing crimes. Let me warn you that such actions are tantamount to corruption. If you are caught, you will face the full wrath of the law. Do not expect President Mnangagwa or the party to come to your rescue. The party will not hesitate to discipline such people as they drag the name of the party and the President into disrepute,” said Cde Tsenengamu.

He said it was worrying to note that such misdeeds were coming at a time when President Mnangagwa was calling for zero tolerance to corruption. Cde Tsenengamu said instead of being caught up in illegal dealings, the youths should be at the forefront assisting the Government in economic turnaround programmes which, in any case, is not a stroll in the park.

“We cannot expect the President to do everything by himself just because we elected him to be President. Everyone has a role to play and it is our duty as the party’s vanguard to play our role and support the President in implementing the austerity measures. Let us appreciate the austerity measures as they are necessary if the country is to heal. There are no shortcuts to the economic turnaround strategy,” he said.

He also took a swipe at some party big wigs and some in positions of power that are sabotaging the President. Speaking at the same gathering, Zanu-PF Youth League Secretary for Finance, Cde Getrude Mutandi, urged youths to remain united and fight against money changers who are causing wanton parallel market activities that were contributing to price increases.

The meeting was part of the National Youth League’s outreach exercise to the youths across the country updating them on the current developments. Midlands party provincial spokesperson, Cde Cornelius Mpereri, Provincial Secretary for Lands Moses Murada and Provincial Youth Secretary for Education Tapiwa Muto were among those who graced the occasion.
