FORMER Premier Soccer League chief executive officer, Chris Sambo has died.

Lifelong Footballers Trust colleague, Francis Zimunya said Sambo passed away at Parirenyatwa Hospital Wednesday.

Zimunya expressed shock at Sambo’s death saying he had busy working on bringing to life a multipurpose football complex in Harare and had brought in investors to fund the project.

Chicken Inn secretary, Tavengwa Hara described Sambo as an astute administrator who had brilliant ideas for the game.

“The Chicken inn FC family wishes to console the football family at large and the Sambo family in particular following the death of Chris. The football we are enjoying today administratively has its foundations rooted from Sambo.

“The man will be greatly missed for his ideas which helps our football to be what it is today. I am one person who occasionally implement his ideas in the running of our club,” he said.

Former Zifa vice president, Ndumiso Gumede said he was gutted as he believed Sambo still had it in him to be part of Zifa in the near future.

“I knew him when he was at Blackpool and he is a man who always sought for things to be done in a correct manner and I was not surprised when he was appointed PSL chief executive officer.

“At the time he was at the PSL, Zifa had a love-hate relationship with the league but he was always cordial and would make efforts to mend the fence. I was at Zifa and he would come to my office in a conciliatory manner and always wanted the best for football and was not self-serving,” he said.

In a statement the PSL said Sambo He served the League with distinction, advocated for the full commercialisation of football.

“We are saddened by the passing of our former CEO Chris Sambo, a passionate football servant who gave a lot for the game he loved.

“He served the League with distinction, advocated for the full commercialisation of football & facilitated various competitions & sponsorships,” read the statement posted on Twitter.

Zimunya said the former Blackpool administrator Sambo will be buried Thursday.
