GERALD Takwara’s remarkable football journey, marked by determination and hard work, has led him to play a defining role in Zimbabwe’s national team.

Known for his versatility, Takwara’s career spans several countries, numerous clubs, and a growing reputation as a key player. As the Warriors look to make history in their quest to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, Takwara (31) is ready to take on a more influential role in a squad brimming with both seasoned internationals and emerging talents.

In the absence of Teenage Hadebe from the Warriors Squad, Takwara is expected to be one of the key players in central defence.

Takwara’s footballing journey began at Tsholotsho FC before he made way to FC Platinum. His early performances in the local league caught the attention of scouts, and he soon made a move to South Africa with Ajax Cape Town.

After stints with Ngezi Platinum in Zimbabwe and Venda in South Africa, Takwara’s career reached a new level when he signed with Saudi Arabian club Ohod in 2022.

His next move saw him secure a contract with Al-Minaa, a club in Iraq’s Stars League, in August 2024. The global journey has sharpened Takwara’s skills, giving him invaluable international experience that has prepared him for the challenges ahead with the Warriors.

The number of leagues and competitions he’s competed in has allowed Takwara to develop a well-rounded game — one that blends technical ability, creativity and a strong defensive presence.

Takwara’s international career began in 2015 with his debut for the Zimbabwe national team in a 0-0 draw with Comoros during the African Nations Championship. Since then, he has consistently been part of the Warriors’ squad, and his most recent appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers demonstrated his growing influence.

A pivotal figure in Zimbabwe’s hopes for World Cup qualification, Takwara is set to play a significant role in the upcoming qualifiers for the 2026 Fifa World Cup. With Zimbabwe facing crucial matches against Benin and Nigeria, Takwara’s experience and leadership will be key in navigating these high-stakes encounters.

The Warriors have been struggling in the qualifiers, and Takwara’s return to the squad provides a much-needed boost.

Takwara will have the support of key players like the returning Knowledge Musona, whose leadership and experience will guide the team, and the defensive stability provided by Jordan Zemura (Udinese) and Divine Lunga (Mamelodi Sundowns). Midfielders such as Marshall Munetsi (Wolves) will provide the defensive cover and creativity that is essential for success, while attacking players like Prince Dube (Young Africans) and Tawanda Maswanhise (Motherwell) could lead the charge for goals.
