TWELVE football and netball teams go head-to-head in the first Heroes Day Sports Gala at Maboleni Business Centre in Vungu Constituency, Lower Gweru.

Hon Omega Sibanda

Organised by veteran football administrator and Member of Parliament for Vungu, Omega Sibanda and headlined by guest of honour, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation, Tino Machakaire, all 11 wards in the constituency will field select sides in both football and netball.

Other sporting codes like tug-of-war and athletics will also be part of the Sports Gala.

In an interview yesterday, Sibanda said until Covid-19 decimated the world of sport, the constituency hosted annual Unity Day Sports Galas on 22 December, but this year they had opted for a Heroes Day event to make for the two years that it was not held due to the lockdowns.

Covid-19

“Ordinarily we always held a Unity Day Sports Gala, but due to Covid-19 we were unable to hold the event for two straight years.

To make up for those two years, we decided to honour our fallen heroes by hosting the first ever Heroes Day Sports Gala in the constituency,” the accomplished administrator told Sunday News from Vungu.

“We will have 12 teams comprising a team each in football and netball from the 11 wards in the constituency, but Maboleni being the host ward will field two teams in these sporting codes,” he added.

Winners of both the netball and the football tournaments will each get a beast while the runners-up will each receive US$150. A third-place finish will earn the teams US$100.

There will also be prizes for the other sporting codes at the tournament.
