THE Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education has appointed principals for Government-run tertiary institutions.
Veteran sports administrator and Hillside Teachers College principal Mr Elkanah Dube’s retirement has paved way for the appointment of Mr Edward Gumpo as the new principal.  Mr Gumpo was the acting principal at United College of Education.

Mr Dube retired from the civil service after serving as the substantive principal since 2009.
“I am happy with the history I left at the institution. I worked tirelessly to ensure that all people who passed through my hands were effectively trained,” said Mr Dube.

“It is also my hope that those who were trained will positively contribute to the growth of the education sector, especially secondary education. I started as a teacher in 1975 and taught in Bulawayo, Umzingwane and Harare.

“I think I have done what can be done and what best someone can do. I hope that my efforts in secondary education will count in improving the pass rate in schools. I want to wish staff at Hillside Teachers College the best and that they continue doing well and achieve more than what I achieved.”

Mr Dube, a former Highlanders Football Club secretary and vice-chairman who now sits in the team’s board, was acting vice-principal for the Bulawayo based teaching institution in 2005 before becoming acting principal in 2006, substantive vice-principal 2007 and substantive principal in 2009.

He retired in June but applied for an extension, which was meant to facilitate a hand-over-take-over.
Mr Adam Luthuli, who was the vice-principal at Mkoba Teachers College is the new principal for United College of Education, taking over from Mr Sipho Moyo who has also retired.

Dr Ngoni Moyo, who has been the acting principal for Joshua Mqabuko Polytechnic in Gwanda has been promoted to the position of principal.

Mr Gilbert Mabasa, who has been the principal of  Bulawayo Polytechnic on an acting capacity has now been appointed as substantive principal.

Announcing the appointments, the ministry said the country is expecting these new principals to work diligently.
“The nation expects these members to exude leadership through high quality workmanship and enhanced team work,” said the ministry in a notice flighted in the Press.
