Lyeja FM community radio station aims to start broadcasting in December using the district’s local languages.

The station manager, Mr Tulani Munyandi, revealed that the radio station, is however, facing funding challenges towards renovating the selected offices, located in the town’s Central Business District.

“The Hwange community is doing individual funding towards renovating the offices so as to make it habitable. We have approached a number of local companies but they are yet to come on board and assist,” Mr Munyandi said.

The station has seen changes through community donations as three rooms have been renovated.

Mr Munyandi said the radio station was a massive developmental step as it promotes local languages; Nambya, Dombe and Ndebele.

“It’s the first time Hwange has been offered a radio station and therefore Lyeja FM station will inform, educate and provide entertainment to the community through information dissemination allowing the Hwange community an opportunity to be heard and to present issues of development as 75 percent of the news will be local content.

“The Hwange music industry will also get an opportunity to be heard in their multiple languages as they rarely get an opportunity to be aired on other radio stations,” he said.

Mr Munyandi added that having contacted the Ministry of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland North, they look forward to the ministry joining hands with the community on the project. -_@5_Shannico+
