A NON-governmental organisation, World Vision has donated 2 400 new curriculum books and furniture to 26 rural schools in Hwange District as part of decongesting the learning environment in the face of Covid 19 pandemic.

The 26 primary and secondary schools, under the organisation’s Area Development Programme (ADP) are set to benefit from the donation which comes at a time when the district performed poorly in the national examinations owing to lack of learning materials. Schools are set to open on Monday for examination classes while the rest will open next week.

Speaking after handing over the material worth US$11 000 last week to Acting Hwange District Schools Inspector, Mr Walter Moyo, World Vision education advisor Mrs Maria Tokwane said the donation was part of efforts to prepare schools for reopening.

“In response to Covid-19, which has given us new ways of doing things that includes social distancing and decongestion of classrooms, we also saw that there was a gap in terms of teaching and learning materials,” said Mrs Tokwane.

She said the set of 450 desk units will also go a long way ensuring that practical social distancing will be observed. World Vision area programme manager Mr Lovemore Nyoni said his organisation was also in the process of fumigating all the rural schools in the six wards under its operation.

Acting Hwange District Schools Inspector Mr Moyo said the donation would go a long way in addressing learning challenges characterising most rural schools.
