Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom Bible

The Sunday News

Sunday Sermon, with Apostle Chisale
Greetings beloved nation in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:9, “. . . We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding”. We once spoke about growing in the knowledge of God and of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We mentioned how we have to seek this knowledge and how many people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge.

In some scriptures in the word of God we find these three words repeated time and again, knowledge, understanding and wisdom.

Proverbs 16:16 tell us that, “How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen than silver.” And Proverbs 24:3 says that, “Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established, by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” Meaning this is the greatest treasure that we can ever obtain as believers. Knowledge on its own is not enough, we also need to have understanding as well as wisdom both in our spiritual walk as well as in our day-to-day lives.

God not only gives us spiritual knowledge but He also gives us His knowledge about life and about specific things in this journey of life.

For example God can give you knowledge on how to be a better spouse, better parent, better businessperson, better at your job, calling or ministry He has called you to. Meaning God will give you direct or specific knowledge in that specific area so as to make you function better in that area He has called you to do or to be. So God will first start off by giving us His knowledge about something specific. However, knowledge on its own will not get the job or task done.

This is where we need to have understanding. Understanding means that we understand the knowledge that has been given to us. If we do not understand this knowledge that has been given to us, then we will struggle to use it or apply it in our lives or in any situation.

Once we understand the knowledge that we have been given, the next step in being able to properly use that knowledge, is to have the actual wisdom to use that knowledge in life or situations. We often see how many people over the years have acquired knowledge and also gained understanding of the knowledge they acquired through their studies, but they lack the wisdom to be able to apply that knowledge in the real world.

We find in this life that there are people who very learned, yet you read about them in newspapers or social media having done very foolish things and you ask yourself how someone so intelligent could do such a thing. This is because they lack common sense and wisdom to be able to use the knowledge they gained. People will go to school, learn and gain knowledge on a variety of subjects.

The next step is to understand the knowledge, because knowledge on its own won’t make you a mechanic or web designer. Then once you have the understanding of the knowledge you were given through learning, next you need the wisdom to be able to apply that knowledge in real life.

The same is true in our spiritual lives. A church that has knowledge of the things of God but has no understanding will be limited. Many believers have knowledge about the things of God like Holy Communion, but they lack understanding and do some of the things of God without understanding.

In many churches believers take Holy Communion religiously and without understanding. We should understand that when you partake of Holy Communion you are drinking the blood of Jesus and you need to do it with understanding because the blood can bless you or judge you if you take it without understanding or as a ritual. If as a church we do not understand certain things, we shall become victims. For example there is the mystery of the blood of Jesus.

The devil and his demons have understanding of the power of the blood that is why many demonic rituals and covenants involve shedding of blood.

As believers we need to have understanding of the things of God so that we can navigate through life and live victorious lives. We also find that in our lives there are many doors that have to be opened and God said I will give you keys and not key.

So meaning you need many keys because there are many doors to be opened, doors to finances, breakthrough, marriage etc. But you also need to have understanding as to which key to use, key of prayer, key of sowing a seed, key of praise, key of speaking in tongues. As believers we can live a life of frustration because our lives will be without results. Why? Because we pray amiss, we pray without understanding and we pray outside the will of God.

This is where we need the Holy Spirit who knows the mind of God, to guide us and teach us and give us understanding. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 2:6 that, “For the Lord gives wisdom, from His mouth come knowledge and understanding, He stores up sound wisdom for the upright.” God is our source of knowledge, understanding and wisdom. We see in the book of Daniel 2:20 where Daniel says, “He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things.”

So meaning God will not only give you His knowledge, but He will also make sure he gives you the understanding of that knowledge and the wisdom to use it. But this will only happen if we are willing to seek after and to seek to fully understand it and how it can be applied in our lives.

Proverbs 4: 1, 5, 7 tells us that we should give attention to know understanding, to get wisdom and get understanding and that in all your getting, get understanding. Once again I would like to invite you to receive Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour, by believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that Jesus is your Lord and Saviour, and you shall be saved. May God bless you all and this beautiful nation Zimbabwe. Amen
