Letters to the Editor: Let’s spare a thought for Zim sports

The Sunday News

So Tendai “The Beast” Mtawarira has decided to call it a day as he retires from international rugby.

What a journey it has been for the athlete.

He has been one of the best players in the sport, both for the club and his adopted country.

While we are proud of him for having won the World Cup for South Africa, I am sure we would have also loved to see him play for Zimbabwe.

Our country is blessed with vast talent when it comes to sport, but we have not been able to reach great heights because of so many administrative problems.

There is not much being done for the development of sport in the country.

Some of our sportspersons end up shining for foreign countries.

Besides Mtawarira, there are numerous Zimbabwean rugby players who have opted to play for other countries and had these decided to represent the motherland, I am sure our national rugby team would have been formidable.

If there are to be proper structures in various sporting disciplines, I am sure we will start seeing more sportspeople wanting to come and raise our flag high on the global stage.

Right now there are numerous soccer players who have shown interest in playing for the Warriors, but we are still having a situation where Zifa is failing to process their passports and other documents.

This shows that we are not serious with sport development because under normal circumstances, it should not be a hustle to process documentation.
