Letters To the Editor:Let us save energy

The Sunday News

If recent reports are anything to go by, then it seems as if Government is working really hard to rectify the power situation in the country.

While Government is doing its part, we, as citizens, also need to play our part if things are going to get any better.

There are worrying reports that there are individuals and corporates that are not paying their electricity bills and this is one of the contributory factors making the situation even worse.

It is high time that action is taken against those who are not paying their electricity bills. They should not only be disconnected, but must also be penalised.

We should also make sure that we start saving the little power we are generating at the moment.

This can be done through numerous ways such as switching to alternative energy sources like solar and gas.

Replacement of electric geysers with solar ones will go a long way in saving energy.

I would also like to urge Government and private players to start investing more in the energy sector.

We have an abundance of coal in Hwange, more thermal power stations should be constructed in that area.

Last but not least, when it comes to giving companies tenders in the power sector, Government must be vigilant this time around so that we do not have a repeat of what happened with Chivayo’s Gwanda Solar project that is still to see the light of the day.

Had that tender been given to a reliable individual or company, I am sure that project would have yielded results by now.

Mudzimu Mukuru,

 Harare.
