ZIMBABWE BORN visual artiste, Solomon Mahlathini proved his worth in the arts industry as he recently exhibited one of his works, titled Goridhe, at a solo exhibition in New York. “Goridhe” is a Shona word which means “gold”. “Gold is a timeless mineral — a mineral that has withstood the test of time.Gold in its purest form is not glittery and razzle-dazzle, but has a modest luster. Gold has history, and maturity, but still relevant in modern times. With the Goridhe collection, I wanted to create timeless historical pieces. Celebrations and appreciations of people I have met in my travels, as well as acknowledging experiences — good and bad — that have occurred in my life journey thus far. I am of the notion that what connect us as a human race are experiences and emotions.

A cry, a smile, dejection, anger, longing for a loved one, losing to someone else, the joy music brings, dance, family and so forth. So I wanted to capture all these moments which would speak to all individuals regardless of race, sex, religion, or political affiliation,” said Mahlathini from his Virginia base.

The 25-year-old artiste used metallic gold as the base for all his creations. Though the hues differ on most of the pieces, the golden element marries them together, and helps to tell a cohesive story.

“My technique consists of gentle and intentionally rough or seemingly careless brushstrokes. It also consists of smooth textures, as well as coarse ones. I’m big on contrast. Contrast of shapes, colour, and texture. I believe it makes the viewing experience more enticing. My creations are a personification of life. In life we experience joy and pain; consistency and obstacles. The pieces serve as a reminder that life is not perfect, but it is worth celebrating. My main technique is that of rubbing or massaging which is a way in which I inject love into my work. It’s a way of sharing my energy and joy as I make each piece which in turn I hope will be reciprocated by those that see or experience it in my work. Love is an experience worth sharing. I hope my work speaks to people, and reassures them that they are perfect in their own unique way. Perfection is derived from acceptance of one’s inner and outer experiences,” he said.

After coming up with a title and theme for the show, Mahlathini saw it only befitting to develop an appropriate character bearing the same name as the theme. He wanted to create a character that is “foreign or alien” in terms of aesthetics, but still possessing relatable human-like features.

“It had to be a character that sees and thinks with the heart, and not the eyes. I left the mouth which I feel is important, as speech or sound is amongst the highest forms of expression; words or sounds have power. I also left an ear, as I feel it is important to listen and take heed of other people’s communication to you. This helps you decide where to place them in your life. Hence Goridhe was born,” he added.

Goridhe will be a recurring character in this year’s collection.
