ALL-ROUNDER Josephine Nkomo has been named as captain of the Zimbabwe national women’s cricket team for the five-match 50 over series against Emerging South Africa which gets underway at Queens Sports in Bulawayo on Tuesday.

The five matches are taking place on 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 May, with all the fixtures starting at 9.30am local time. No spectators will be allowed into the stadium due to Covid-19 protocols.

Nkomo, a pace bowler who also bats in the middle order will lead the Lady Chevrons against their up and coming counterparts from South Africa in the absence of captan Mary-Anne Musonda who recently had a knee surgery.

Musonda is one of the several senior players not available for the series. Ashley Ndiraya also had surgery to fix a broken thumb.

The duo of Nommater Mutasa and Chipo Tiripano are on maternity leave. Anesu Mutasa is still stuck in Australia while Sharne Mayers is in South Africa where she is tied down by work commitments.

Zimbabwe are preparing for the International Cricket Council Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier scheduled for Sri Lanka in December.The Women’s Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be held in New Zealand in March and April 2022.

It was originally scheduled for 6 February to 7 March 2021 but was postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Zimbabwe are also preparing to take part in the ICC Women’s Qualifier Africa to be staged in Botswana in September.

The Adam Chifo coached Lady Chevrons have been fine tuning at Old Hararians Sports Club since 6 May and travel to Bulawayo today while their opponents are also landing in Zimbabwe this afternoon.
