THE National University of Science and Technology (Nust) through the Department of Civil and Water Engineering has won the bid to host the 21st WaterNet/ WARSA/ GWP symposium which will be held in Victoria Falls in October.

The WaterNet symposium is an annual conference that provides water professionals with opportunities to discuss the management of fresh water sources, harnessing and distributing water. The Department of Civil and Water Engineering put a bid to host the next symposium at the WaterNet Annual General Meeting in South Africa last year which was attended by the Dean of the department, Dr William Makaya.

Dr Makaya said when the bid was presented to WaterNet it was to be held in Bulawayo.

“They reconsidered hosting it in Bulawayo because it does not have tourist attraction venues hence choosing Victoria Falls since they have many activities to entertain guests as some will be visiting the country for the first time. This was a challenge for Bulawayo to come with tourist attracting venues,” said Dr Makaya.

The WaterNet/ WARFSA/ GWP-SA symposia have been held annually in the Eastern and Southern African region for the past 15 years. The symposium promotes interaction among policymakers, academics, practitioners from water and related sectors, and co-operating partners.

Together, they identify regional issues, gaps and priorities that require further research and support. Great emphasis will be placed on integration of knowledge, particularly involving scholars from the natural, medical and social sciences.

The 20th WaterNet/ WARFSA/ GWP-SA Symposium was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in October 2019 under the theme, “Integrated Water Resources Development and Management: Leaving No One Behind for Sustainable Water Security in Eastern and Southern Africa”.
