Nkomwa Foundation Trust and Bible Society of Zimbabwe last week collaborated in hosting a four-day training for caregivers and equipped them with assessment skills for children with disabilities in Gwanda.

Nkomwa Foundation is a non-profit making organisation and its mandate is to uplift and support children and youths with disabilities. Bible Society of Zimbabwe is a Christian organisation formed in 1965 and is a member of United Bible Societies.

Its mission is to afford every Zimbabwean the opportunity to access the word of God in their preferred language.
The collaboration between the two partners in Matabeleland South saw them equipping caregivers with skills, and who also get tips from dieticians and physiotherapist on how to handle people with disabilities.

Shumirai Zangure Masakara, the trainer of the project from Bible Society said that the project began in 2019 when they decided to help children with disabilities.

“When we looked in the community, we realised that most vulnerable people were those with disabilities and thus we decided to empower them by giving them training on how to make products like washing powder, petroleum jelly, toilet cleaner, sanitisers, foam bath and other consumables so that they will be able to earn a living.

“I also have a daughter who is disabled and this motivated me to work with vulnerable people. I also worked with Remangwana Ravo group which also deals with helping the disabled. We have been to places like Nguboyenja in Bulawayo, Hauna (Manicaland), Marondera, we are now in Gwanda. I would like to advice women out there not to hide their disabled children because these children come with a blessing and they need to be taken care of,” she said.

One of the caregivers, Sebenzile Ndlovu expressed gratitude to the hosts for giving them the opportunity to learn new skills like dishwasher making.
