HANU Patel of the United States of America got his revenge on South African Calum Jestin to win the boys title at the Cranrid International Tennis Federation World Tennis Tour Juniors at Bulawayo Country Club yesterday.

Patel had lost to the same opponent in the final of the first tournament that was also sponsored by Cranrid Petroleum. The American won the match 6-1, 6-2. Celina Joseph of South Africa defeated her compatriot Sophia Fuller to win the girls final.

Joseph won the match 6-3, 6-2 to follow up the success she enjoyed in the first tournament where she defeated top seeded Zimbabwean 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Clifford Nhokwara, the Tennis Zimbabwe administrator said there was a good turnout for the two tournaments held in Bulawayo.

“It was a very good turnout, we had quite good representation from Zimbabwe and our neighbouring countries. We also had players as far as Japan, Australia, USA, Germany so that was quite a diverse entry,’’ Nhokwara said.

On the performance of the Zimbabwean players, Nhokwara felt that they held their own against their international opponents.

“Our Zimbabwean players did very well, we won girls doubles in the first tournament, we had a girls finalist in the second week and we also had a boys doubles winner in the last week so the Zimbabwean players did pretty good. A few of them also picked some points, the likes of Kudzai Chapepa, she picked her first points in this particular event so well done to the Zimbabwean players,’’ Nhokwara said.

In August, Zimbabwe is hosting three more tournaments, two J4s and one J3, which will be all bankrolled by Cranrid Petroleum at Harare Sports Club.

Nhokwara explained that the J5 tournaments like the ones held in Bulawayo are entry level while the J4s and J3s have more points with more requirements from the ITF for hosting them like providing accommodation, transportation and food for all the participants for the J3s. — Follow on Twitter @Mdawini_29
