PREPARATIONS for this year’s International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which will be held at Stanley Square in Makokoba on 24 June are on course with several activities planned.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade.

Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Cde Judith Ncube is expected to be the guest of honour and the commemorations will be held under the theme: “Drug use in Zimbabwe, a search for a sustainable drug policy”.

Councillor Shadreck Sibanda

Also slated to make presentations at the event are Makokoba Member of Parliament, James Sithole, Councillor Shadreck Sibanda, Zimbabwe Youth Council, drug use survivors, representatives from the Zimbabwe Republic Police Criminal Investigations Department (Narcotics), Health Ministry officials, officials from the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Drugs, Bulawayo Social Soccer League and the Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network (ZCLDN).

According to ZCLDN executive director, Mr Wilson Box, Makokoba was chosen as the venue of this year’s event because it is one of the suburbs which has had a lot of issues with drug use challenges and it is where many of the city’s impoverished residents live.

“We chose Makokoba because it is one of the urban centres that has had its fair share of drug use problems.

We are also cognisant of the fact that many under-privileged people live there who are most likely to engage in drug use.

“So, we thought of not leaving them behind especially in the fight against drug use, HIV and Aids, TB and other opportunistic infections.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

For the country to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) goals especially goal three (Good Health and Well-being), Makokoba should be a pilot for other suburbs to be shielded from the scourge of illicit substance and drug use,” said Mr Box.
