PUPILS from Sagonda Primary School in Nkayi District, Matabeleland North will embark on a 53-kilometre walk in a bid to raise funds to procure educational and building material that will be used to enhance education at the institution.

The walk will be held from 24 to 26 July, under the theme: “Empowering learners through availing a conducive learning environment”.

School head Mr Sethukile Ndlovu said the walk was meant to raise funds to buy material that would benefit both teachers and pupils.

“We came up with this idea as a form of fundraising for the learners. The school intends to raise $150 000 from well-wishers so that we purchase items that consist of sports equipment, ICT tools, sanitary ware, toiletries, textbooks, for school electrification, school fence and furniture.

“The money raised will be solely used for procuring items that will benefit our children and help them attain the education they need. We managed to get support from parents as some will join us in the walk and most importantly for availing their children to take part in the event,” said Mr Ndlovu.

He said 20 pupils accompanied by five staff members will embark on the fundraising campaign, which will start at the school and end at Nkayi Growth Point.

“We saw it fit to target 14-year-old pupils, as they are much stronger and are able to walk. The children would be expected to cover 15 to 17 kilometres a day so that they reach their destination. We have also managed to secure places where they will rest and sleep. They also have enough supplies for the journey. On the first night they will sleep at Gomo Primary School, while on the second day they will be at Nkayi Primary and on the final day they will sleep at Nkayi High school. We will be accompanied by some of the parents and members of the health department to offer their services in case we are faced by challenges along the way.”

He appealed to well-wishers to contribute towards the walk.

“The school’s banking details are ZB bank, Jason Moyo branch and account no 4307-185802-200-RTGS account, account number 4307-185802-406- Nostro account. We also accept EcoCash and anyone who desires can use our school’s merchant code *151*2*3*52850*$# and the reference number is 0000. We are appealing to everyone and any organisation for help,” said Mr Ndlovu.
