A R15 000 football tournament to be held in Irisvale, Matabeleland South has been pencilled in for August.

The Fasa Nhe Invitational Tournament will feature 12 teams that participate in the Umzingwane Social Soccer League and will be played at Irisvale Stadium with dates yet to be finalised.

According to the tournament’s sponsor, South Africa-based businessman, Jerkins Moyo, the tournament will be played over one day.

Moyo said his organising committee will soon engage the league’s management committee about the format of the tournament.

“I have set aside R15 000 for the tournament which will be played at Irisvale Stadium in August.

My organising committee will soon be engaging the relevant authorities to advise us on the best format to use.

The tournament will be played over one day,” the Irisvale-born Moyo told Sunday Sport from his base in Johannesburg.

Moyo, who grew up in Ward 13 runs a branding company in South Africa, said although there would be no prize money, medals and trophies were in place for the winners as well as the second and third-placed teams.

He added that there would be presenting awards for the golden boot winner, player of the tournament and goalkeeper of the tournament.

The tournament is a first of its kind in Umzingwane District and has already attracted the attention of local Division Two sides who are hoping to use the event to scout for talent.

Mawabeni United chairman Mkhululi Nkomo described the organisation of the tournament as an opportunity for local players to showcase their talents.

Nkomo said his club welcomed the opportunity to have a look at players who would ordinarily be unable to play before big crowds.

“We are grateful to the sponsor for giving young players and Umzingwane’s Division Two clubs a chance to have a look at the talent that is within the district.

My club could very well benefit from such a tournament with scores of players showing off what they can do on the field,” the Mawabeni United chairman said.

His sentiments were echoed by Habane Pirates chairman, Ben Ndlovu who added that many local players had missed the cut when his club and their local rivals, Mawabeni registered players for the 2019 season, but now had a chance to convince the respective coaches of their abilities.

Among the teams expected to participate are Selibona Thutshu Nampabantu FC, Habane FC, Irisvale and Gold Reef.
