RIDERS from different countries yesterday had an opportunity to feel the Busters BMX cycle track ahead of the African Continental BMX Racing  Championships which get underway this morning.

The race has riders from Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Morocco. The coveted prize presents a berth to the Olympics next year.

The spokesperson for the organisers in Bulawayo, Jackie Pikoulis, said : “We are  expecting over 100 riders for the event. Zimbabwe will have 70 riders in the competition. South Africa has 30 riders while Ivory Coast and Morocco will have a rider each in the continental challenge.”

She added: “There will be three qualifying races before the final. All the focus is on the track.

You won’t be able to take your eyes off the track. It will be exhilarating and electric. I get goose bumps just thinking about it. It’s going to be some breath taking racing. Every age group has some tough competition. For the first time ever we have four countries represented. Zimbabwe has been rising on the rankings and we expect a good showing from the Zimbabwean riders.”

Speaking at yesterday’s practice session, Zimbabwean rider Joe Ruwoko was confident of a podium finish.

“I have my sights on finishing either second or first. The track is looking good and l am raring to go,” said Ruwoko.

South African rider Manqoba Madida was also impressed with the track.

“I am happy with the organisation of the tournament. The track is good and l’m looking forward to the competition,” said Madida.

The prize from the tournament will be a ticket to the French capital of Paris next year which will host the 2024 Olympics.
