DESPITE the success of the sixth edition of the ROIL Bulawayo Arts Awards, the organisers of the city’s premium dress party have said for this year’s edition they will revert to their November hosting month.

For the first time since its inception last year’s awards were held on Christmas Eve at the Large City Hall as organisers aimed at catching the festive season visitors to the city, who over the years have not been part of the event.

Nkululeko Nkala, one of the organisers said they were happy with last year’s attendance which he said gave them the push to immediately start working on this year’s event. He said the BAAs were a big event that needed a lot of funds and enough planning for it to be a success, hence the move to already start working on the 7th edition of the annual ceremony.

“We started the ROIL Bulawayo Arts Awards with the aim of making the event an annual norm, thus the end of one event signals the beginning of the next. We learnt a lot of organising lessons that we would gladly carry to this year’s edition but the 2022 BAAs taught us that December is definitely not for us and that we will go back to our usual November period. We are appreciative to all the artistes that graced the event, they are the owners of the awards and the event is there because of them. We are also grateful to all our sponsors, our biggest sponsor ROIL and the sponsor of the people’s choice award, TCI International, as they have made Msiz’kay a home owner. Some sponsors are already coming through for the 2023 event and we aim to make the event even bigger,” he added.

The 2022 edition of the awards, however, lived up to everyone’s expectations, with the glitz and glamour associated with them. From another point of view, one could have sworn that the event was nothing but a fashion show as there were all kinds of outfits.

From five-star event suits to the ordinary fashion attires for the gentlemen while for the ladies no matter what outfits they were wearing, they all spiced it up with a pair of heels to give that catchy red-carpet walk.

Poet, Sthandazile Dube graced the event in nothing but her traditional attire which brought out her proud Ndebele culture, which saw the fashion police of the day voting her as one of the best dressed.

“I need no heels to look amazing, I’m amazing even in my culture,” gloated Dube when asked to describe her attire.

As an event like no other, the residents of the City of Kings and Queens came out in their numbers to grace the long-awaited event which had been moved from November to December. People from the diaspora were also there to witness their much-loved artistes given their awards unlike during the Covid-19 era when the BAAs were being held virtually.

A total of 36 nominees were honoured at the occasion, with TCI International serving as the sponsor of the biggest prize of the day — a fully serviced residential stand in Emganwini suburb — which went to the great and amazing musician Msiz’kay.

The entertainment of the night was also top notch, with sizzling performances from the biggest winner of the night, Msiz’kay, the Newcomer of the Year Andrea The Vocalist and the ever jovial gospel musician, Snowy, among others.

The main stage presenters of the night — Mbo Mahocs and Arthur Evans — did not let the crowd down with their top notch handling of the event
