KING Mambo of the Mambo Dynasty says sanctions imposed on the country should be declared a crime against humanity.

The country has been under economic sanctions for the past 20 years which has caused untold suffering in various sectors of the economy.

Sadc countries set aside 25 October as a day to call for the unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western countries.

This year’s event is the second in a row following the first which was held last year. In a statement yesterday, King Mambo said the suffering of the people brought by sanctions could not be ignored hence he had to add his voice.

“I am joining Sadc countries and Africa at large on calling for the removal of sanctions on Zimbabwe. Sanctions against Zimbabwe should be declared a crime against humanity. Twenty years of sanctions have failed to achieve the desired results but instead have caused a great suffering to my people especially the poor. It is now time for the removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe,” he said.

King Mambo said as a traditional leader he could not ignore the cries of business and other economic sectors who have articulated how sanctions have affected their businesses.

“How long should the innocent suffer? It was said that they are only targeting certain individuals but the fact of the matter is that the poorest of the poor are hardest hit. I am speaking for the people we lead who face daily challenges as a result of the illegal sanctions,” said King Mambo.

King Mambo, born Mike Moyo who is also referred to as Ilitshe Aligiqiki was installed last year during a ceremony attended by 80 chiefs drawn from across the country.
