THE Senior Minister of State in the President’s Office,who is also Zanu-PF National Chairman, Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo, will tomorrow lead a delegation to Cuba for an official visit following an invitation by the Communist Party.In a statement, the director in the National Chairman’s office, Cde Kizito Kuchekwa, said the six-day visit is expected to explore ways of promoting bilateral relations between the two countries as well as sharing of notes on political and economic developments.
“We have always enjoyed good relations with Cuba but this visit is going to explore more ways of promoting bilateral relations in the country’s education and economic sectors,” said Cde Kuchekwa.
The delegation includes the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Dr Olivia Muchena and Dr Gatsha Mazithulela the Principal Director in the President’s Office.
“The delegation will exchange experiences at both party and State levels encompassing socio-economic developments. Key on the visit will be official meetings with members of the central committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and Members of the Cuban Parliament,” said Cde Kuchekwa.
Cuba has over the years assisted Zimbabwe in areas of development, particularly in science education and provision of medical doctors who operate in many parts of the country’s provinces.
The Communist Party of Cuba and Zanu-PF (ZANU and ZAPU) enjoy fraternal relations dating back to the liberation struggle and post-independence.
Cuba provided arms and military training to the country’s liberation forces and training in many other fields during the struggle for independence. Relations, however, still continue to blossom in many fields.
Zimbabwe and Cuba also share the same predicament of being subject to illegal economic sanctions by the West for taking a principled stand against neo-colonialism.
Cuba has over the years explored possible avenues of partnership especially in trade and tourism sectors.
