REIGNING Bulawayo Social Soccer League champions, Stars FC survived a scare when they settled for a draw against Patapata last Sunday.

However, even though the draw derailed their arrival on the promised land, it was enough to keep alive their hopes of landing the coveted crown twice in a row. Before the game they were agonisingly brought down to earth by Fundukulinda 3-2 in a tightly contested match which is still talk of the town.

Funda, as they are affectionately known within the league, are on a mission to enforce a “New World Order” looking at the way they have been pounding all teams standing on their way that includes Stars FC.

That defeat they handed Stars is still haunting them like the Bulawayo ghosts Jane and Josephine who terrorised motorists way back in the 90s.

In their next assignment Stars were back firing on all cylinders to thrash helpless CreamTata 9-0 during match day 41.

However, their 1-1 draw against Patapata in match day 42 extinguished all the morale they have gathered afterwards. Their nearest rivals Mthala agonisingly blew away another golden opportunity in as many games to narrow the lead when they were edged 1-0 by Iminyela.

Furthermore the defeat of the two teams who are fighting for the top post 70 Combination as well as Mthala is a blessing in disguise for the Cowdray Park Torch Bearers Masters plus Man U who have all gone on a mazy run winning a number of games along the way.

If they continue marching along the same coordinate chances of seeing any of the two gatecrushing into second spot from the blue when the season finally comes to an end looks bright.

In pool B log leaders Skippers took another giant step towards being crowned the best team in the league after thrashing Crackers 7-1.

Nkosilathi “Guttuso” Nkomo the spokesperson of Skippers said all the remaining games are tricky hence they need to be tackled one game at a time bearing in mind that a lot of teams are still in contention.

“As a team we still feel the tricky games are yet to come so we need to treat all games as they come because if ‘get ahead of ourselves’ we risk missing our target which is to be crowned winners in our respective pool.

“The five-point lead is not much, we need to soldier on bearing in mind that our pool has a lot of tricky teams who are always itching to beat the log leader, in fact, they want to embarrass them,” said Nkomo.

When asked what is the message the team gives to the players at this stage of the marathon race which can go right up to the wire Guttoso said as a team they have seen it fit to give financial rewards to the team for every goal they score in order to push them to apply themselves even harder.

Another contender, Mayihlome also made sure that they don’t lose sight of the log leader after winning 3-1 against Pioneer away from home

Meanwhile, in the skies companies league Zimra posted another morale after thrashing their colleagues from Swift 5-1.

Blue Stars picked another set of three point after edging Red seal Rovers 2-1 while Footless switches of the cell one for 90 minutes to win 2 -1. According to the log standing Zimra is still the team to beat after collecting 60 points from 25 games to date. Rolling Stars alongside Footless sit on second and their position respectively they have the same number of points that is 52 though Rolling Stars has a superior goal difference.
