THREE people reportedly died on Friday morning in an accident when a Ford Ranger twin cab side swiped with a Kombi before colliding head on with haulage truck along the Gweru-Shurugwi road.
The accident happened at around 7 am at the 20 km peg along Gweru-Shurugwi highway.
According to a witness, the twin cab was travelling from Gweru with two people on board while the commuter omnibus was also going in the same direction and the haulage truck was coming from Unki Mine in Shurugwi.
On approaching the 20 km peg the driver of the twin cab reportedly over took the Kombi but realised that there was an oncoming haulage truck.
The driver swerved back to the left and sideswiped with the Kombi before colliding head on with the haulage truck.
Police at the scene of the accident said two people aboard the Kombi and a passenger from the twin cab died on the spot following the collision while the haulage truck driver Mr Adeline Buwa escaped with minor head injuries.
When the Sunday News crew arrived at the scene, police were still attending to the accident.
Mr Buwa said he was heading to Gweru when the accident occurred.
“I was coming from Shurugwi when the accident occurred. The twin cab was overtaking a Kombi at a curve and encroached into my lane. When realizing he could not proceed, the driver of the twin cab tried to swerve back into the left lane and sideswiped with the Kombi. Before we collided head on. I then lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road. The other two vehicles also veered off the road. Three people died on the spot,” he said.
The three victims were taken to Shurugwi District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Their names are yet to be released as their immediate families are yet to be informed.
The driver of the twin cab and the haulage truck were also taken to the same hospital for treatment.
