THE death toll from the typhoid and dysentery outbreak in Bulawayo has risen to 17.

More than 1600 residents of mainly Old Luveve suburb have been affected by the outbreak that has caused alarm in Bulawayo.

Ward 15 Councilor, Mrs Febbie Msipha  on Wednesday said the number of those who have perished has gone up despite Bulawayo City Council efforts to ensure people are attended to early.

She revealed that council health officials had resorted to attending to those who have difficulty finding their way to the clinic at their homes.

“The number of those who died has gone up to 17 although I do not have the exact details of those who have passed on. We are working to ensure everyone is quickly attended to hence we have the mobile health facility which will attended to people at home,” said Mrs Msipha.

Council had advised people to seek treatment early attributing deaths to lack immediate attention to those exhibiting symptoms of the diseases. BCC has also offered free treatment to those affected as a way to curb further deaths.
