THE Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) wants to institute disciplinary measures against 27 of the association’s councillors who signed a petition calling for an extraordinary congress.

Zifa general secretary, Joseph Mamutse on Friday wrote to Fifa advising that communication sent to councillors to confirm if they had indeed called for the EGM had not been responded to.

Zifa wrote individually to the 27 councillors to confirm that indeed they had not been coerced to sign the petition, with the deadline to respond being last Friday.

“Further to our letter dated 3 January 2022 in which we advised that we shall request Zifa Congress Delegates who requested for an EGM to confirm whether they voluntarily participated in the petition, on 3 January 2022 we wrote memo to all delegates and as at 12 January 2022 we were not favoured with any response. On the 12th of January 2022 we then wrote individual letters to the 27 delegates (sample letters attached) and gave them up to 14 January 2022 to respond,’’ reads part of Zifa’s letter to Fifa.

The Zifa executive committee believes that since the councillors did not respond, the EGM has no legal force and the leadership can now move forward with disciplinary procedures against those who signed the petition for “bringing the game of football into disrepute”.

“Failure by the delegates to respond on the set deadline renders the process a nullity and leave the Executive Committee with no option but to institute disciplinary action against them for bringing the game of football into disrepute.

We thank you for taking note. Sincerely Yours and on behalf of Zifa,’’ signed off Mamutse.

The Zifa secretariat had set 29 January as the date for the EGM whose highlight is the revocation of the mandate of some of the Felton Kamambo-led board that was in November suspended by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC).
