WITH lockdown restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the country, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) will make use of technology to hold their annual general meeting on Tuesday.

ZC acting managing director, Givemore Makoni said considering that the country is on lockdown, which limits movement between provinces, they decided to have a virtual gathering. Delegates from the country’s 10 provinces will meet online to deliberate on 14 items on the agenda.
“We are under lockdown as a country with restricted movement, we have had to resort to a virtual meeting to adhere to the constitution. All the 10 provinces will be represented at the virtual AGM and the board will also be in attendance,’’ Makoni said.

ZC have already made use of technology to conduct meetings, with the association’s board gathering held online at the end of May. Use of technological advancement will save ZC from spending funds on travel and accommodation with the delegates to be paid their sitting allowances for the virtual gathering.

Seeing that there are no elections this year, there has been less excitement in the build up to ZC’s 2020 AGM unlike the 2019 one which sparked a lot of controversy and led to Zimbabwe’s membership temporarily suspended by the International Cricket Council.

Last year, ZC went ahead with their AGM in Victoria Falls where Tavengwa Mukuhlani was given another four-year mandate in charge of the second biggest sport in the country despite communication from the Sports and Recreation Commission a day before not to conduct the meeting.

What followed was one of the darkest periods in the history of cricket in Zimbabwe with the country’s ICC membership put on ice in July after the SRC responded by suspending the elected ZC board together with Makoni and appointed an interim committee to run the affairs of the cricket mother body.

The ICC deemed that the action taken by the SRC amounted to Government interference in the running of the sport. After months of stand-off, the SRC reinstated the ZC board that saw the ICC lift Zimbabwe’s suspension at their board meeting held in the United Arab Emirates.

Looking at the agenda, the highlight of Tuesday’s meeting is certain to be when delegates consider and adopt ZC’s audited balance sheet. When the ZC board met last month, they adopted the financial statement, which must now be ratified by the delegates at the AGM before being sent to the ICC and SRC. What should be pleasing for the game’s stakeholders is that ZC have paid off the US$3 million ICC loan and the $10 million loans housed under the Zimbabwe Asset Management Company. @Mdawini_29
