MATABELELAND Busters picked up their fifth win of the season in the National Rugby League when they saw off city rivals Old Miltonians by just two points in a closely fought encounter played at Hartsfield Rugby Ground in Bulawayo yesterday.
Busters led 3-0 at halftime courtesy of a penalty goal booted in by flyhalf Tarisai Mugariri.
In the second half, Busters stretched their lead when prop Irvine Nduwa went over for a try, converted by Mugariri which put the 2012 losing finalists 10-0 ahead.
OMs reduced the Busters lead to five points when they recorded a try scored by front rower Victor Chiwara which was, however, not converted. George Savada further cut the Busters lead to just two points with a penalty goal but he was guilty of missing some kickable penalties which could have won the match for OMs towards the end of the match.
Busters finished the game one man short after replacement Brendon Scheepers was shown a yellow card by referee Simbarashe Dangah for repeated infringements.
At Harare Sports Club, last year’s losing finalists Old Georgians hammered Western Panthers 93-0, Harare Sports Club routed Gweru Sports Club 96-10 while at Mutare Sports Club defending champions Old Hararians defeated the home side 30-7.
In schools rugby matches played across the country, Christian Brothers College coach Neil Nesbitt was left wondering what he has to do to win a match after watching his team lose their fifth match in a row when they were defeated 44-20 by visiting Kyle College at home yesterday. The loss leaves CBC yet to win a match so far this season after defeats to Saint George’s College, Falcon College, Prince Edward and Churchill.
PE conquered Saint Johns College 25-16 in their own backyard, Peterhouse beat Churchill 43-19, Falcon College won 20-18 away to St George’s College, Eaglesvale beat Hillcrest 41-12, Goldridge prevailed 17-5 over Heritage, Midlands Christian College thrashed Watershed 66-6, Plumtree were 31-19 victorious over Milton while Hellenic thumped Gateway 67-12.
