Bulawayo artistes’ struggle to shine in previous national arts awards has inspired a Nkulumane 5-based dancehall artiste, Jefta Chakanaka aka Master Jeftaz to pen a hit single titled Bulawayo artistes.

The single addresses the grievances faced by local artistes. The artiste, who uses a vibrant riddim from Smashtainnent, said Bulawayo artistes’ activities are limited and it is high time they become more adventurous.

“Many local artistes have performed countless times in the City of Royalty. However, that’s not enough. For us to be known across the country we need to perform many times outside the city. We need to visit all corners of the country so we can match the achievements of the likes of Jah Prayzah and Winky D. We need to believe in our talents and see ourselves taking over the industry in the upcoming arts awards,” he said.

Master Jeftaz said many artistes have songs that are rarely played on local radio stations and urged the likes of Khulumani FM and Skyz Metro FM to create programmes that will see upcoming artistes receiving airplay.

“It’s now five years since my music career started. I am still trying to fully penetrate and rise within the music industry. All this is caused by the lack of appreciation of dancehall music by local radio DJs. Another factor is that there are a few programmes that are dedicated to upcoming artistes,” he said.
