Byo team ready to defend title

THE Bulawayo team yesterday held a three-hour training session at the venue of Sunday’s National Cross Country Championships — Hillside Dams.

Manuel Mpofu, the Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman said all the 36 athletes turned up for what is the final preparation as the province looks to defend the national title they won at Morris Depot in Harare last year.

The first fine tuning session took place at White City Stadium last Saturday following the final team selection held at Luveve High School on 22 January.

“All the athletes pitched up were in high spirits, we are ready to defend our title we won at Morris Depot,’’ said Mpofu.

Sicino Mpofu, Thulisile Dube are the coaches for Bulawayo while the team manager is Musawenkosi Thabane. According to Mpofu, some of the athletes Bulawayo is counting upon are Trust Chidomaya, Berbeton Mhlanga, Dumo Mkhwananzi, Brenda Banda, Annie Chirisa, Lynette Tom and Faith Sikhosana.

The races the athletes will compete in on Sunday are the 2,5 kilometres for cadets for development where no points are scored, junior women over 6km, junior men 8km, senior women and men who will compete in the 10km.

There is also mixed relays over 8km with the teams made up of two men and the same number of women.

Meanwhile, the provincial teams are expected to arrive in Bulawayo on Saturday.
