IT is holiday time and many boys and girls have put their books away for now. Who can blame them? It is time for relaxation. After all next year is a new year and they would be moving a step further in their levels of education.

Rest is equally necessary. It is expecting too much for somebody to expect young ones to be on books all the time. However, you can be learning while on holiday. A number of senses are still at work even when relaxing at home.

However, saying this does not mean one has to completely divorce herself or himself from books. Learning does not come from books alone. A good learner can learn through observation.
You visit a lot of places during the holidays which can assist you accumulate a lot of ideas which come in handy in writing of compositions. A lot of things happen outside school, so tap into those for an improved performance.

I am not oblivious to the fact that some learners are addicted to watching television. During the holidays they watch television from sunrise to late into the night without ceasing.

This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and should be condemned if it exists at home. But, watching television is not outright wrong. There are some educational programmes on offer in some channels which provide valuable information to learners.

Addiction

Learners can learn how ideas are developed from watching different kinds of films. Films or soapies develop from ideas be it single or multiple. These help interested learners follow the pattern of developing ideas in their compositions.

They have introductions which lead on to real issues in the story. Some start from low and they rise to a crescendo and then resolutions are offered. A wise learner can use that skill in his or her essay writing.
These dramas help on character development such that when they fall into good hands can greatly improve the performance of the learner. Many people now have computers. Why not use those gadgets for research?

There are many channels which offer a wide cross-section of readers which many diligent learners can use and read many books to their fill. Being on holiday does not mean that you totally forget about books.

Books

I have said people are readying for higher classes next year. What that means is for one to thoroughly prepare for the new challenge. Do not allow yourself to get rust as that does not augur well for the next class. Keep on reading and studying though in a relaxed manner since you are on holiday.

Avoid falling into illicit vices like drugs and alcoholism. Many young people today are prone to falling into uncouth behaviours to the detriment of their future.
Stick to the core business of learning first before anything else. It is important to understand your background and live within your means.

If you are uncomfortable with what some call poor relish of things like dried vegetables (umfushwa) and beans while at school, this should drive you to study hard and pass your examinations so that in the end you will have the luxury of eating what you think is best for you.

Do not put pressure on your guardians and parents and fail to perform well at school. Work hard at school and forget about things which will waste your body so as to appear older than your age.
Today’s article was one of advice since schools have just closed for the year. However, this does not stop us from having some points to sharpen the mind as we relax.
