HWANGE Colliery Company Limited have set their sights on inviting more golfers from across the Southern African region to participate at the Kamandama Memorial Fundraising Annual Golf Tournament.

Speaking after the prize awards ceremony on Tuesday last week, HCCL human resources executive services Ray Munangwa, who is also chairman of the Hwange Golf Club, said plans were being put in place to invite golfers from the region in the next editions of the memorial golf tourney in a bid to make it bigger.

“Next year going forward we really want to go regional and as such we are going to invite golfers from the region to participate since some of the miners that perished in the mine disaster came from various countries. Thus the next editions are going to be even bigger and better,” said Munangwa.

He said this year’s edition which attracted 90 amateur golfers including three South Africans and two Zambians was a huge success.

Munangwa who is also patron of the Kamandama Disaster Fund said various efforts would continue being made towards enhancing funding realised from the golf tourney.

“This tournament was a cut above the rest. It’s the best we have organised since I joined this company. We had targeted to get funding of $20 000 and I am glad that we even surpassed that and I thank our sponsors for the support they showed monetary wise and for the prizes that were won by the golfers. Next year we are targeting fundraising over $25 000,” said Munangwa.

Proceeds realised from the golf tournament are channelled towards assisting widows and orphans of the miners that perished in the Kamandama mine disaster on 6 June 1972.

Hwange-based golfer Joseph Dubani Ncube took the first prize, outstandingly beating a pool of seasoned golfers at the 46th edition of the Kamandama memorial golf fundraising tournament.

Posting 44 points, Ncube landed the most prized crown while lady golfer Shelly Gwanonga showed her mantle once again by winning the day as she recorded 43 on the score. — @DNsingo
