THE ability to identify various interior design styles will assist homeowners to raise inspirational visions of their homes and provide a framework to build their personal aesthetic.

Basic understanding of design styles is important in solidifying your personal design ideals.

In this week’s column I continue to give you interior design fundamentals and styles.

Transitional design is a popular style that is common in most homes as it borrows from both traditional and modern design.

This style gives a balance and unified space that is appealing.

Transitional design may combine modern materials such as steel and glass then unite them with luxurious furnishings. It also includes neutral colour palettes. By so doing it creates a calm and relaxed space that manages to feel stylish and sleek, as well as welcoming.

Vintage design offers a more feminine, soft and subtle touch. It is also known as shabby chic style that has furnishing which is often distressed or appears to be, paints tends to have antique-style finishes. The colour palettes include white and cream.

Light fixture and wall hangings are elaborate and it continues with the feminine vibe.

Retro design is a throwback to the design style of some centuries ago and there are some elements of minimalism. It accentuate on pared-down forms, natural shapes such as “egg-shaped” chair, easy-to-use contemporary designs and simple fabrics and patterns.

This design easily complements any interior design and also helps with seamless transition from interior to exterior. Retro design also includes bright colours that grab people’s attention.

Victorian design style is a dramatic style, perfect for homeowners who like to make a statement at the same time showing off their personality. It tends to be luxurious and sophisticated as it incorporates velvet furnishings and antiques. The colour palettes are bold such as purple, red and turquoise.

Alternative style is a popular style for home design. It replicates a carefree lifestyle with little rules, except to follow your heart desires . . . there is a relaxed attitude where anything goes as long as you love it.

It may include vintage furniture and light fixtures, globally inspired textiles and rugs, displays of collections, and items found in widely varied sources including flea markets and during one’s travels.

This design is characterised by floor pillows and comfortable seating spaces. This eclectic style can incorporate an ultra-glam chandelier paired with a rug and a vintage chair such as egg-shaped chairs or weaved.

It is important to know different interior designs styles and its jargons to express your inspired vision.
