Job versus work: Words of wisdom

The Sunday News

A job is a paid position of regular employment e.g. Accountants, doctors, Teachers, Lawyers, Engineers, etc. On the other hand, work is your passion, your gift, your purpose. It’s something that you were born to do before you die.

Points to note

Your job is not your work. Your job limits you, you are controlled by the statutes of the organisation or company. You are given a salary at the end of the week or month. At a specific age, they retire you. Your services won’t be required at that particular organisation.

This is different from work. Work is what you were born to do. It’s your gift, your talent. You set up goals and standards for yourself. You are goal-oriented. You are thirsty for fulfilling your dreams. You are worried about leaving a legacy. You are worried about breaking the bondages of poverty in your family.

Everyone is born with a gift inside. Birds are hatched with a flight to fly; fish is hatched with a swim to swim. Birds and fish don’t go for flight or swimming lessons. These characteristics are inherent. You will never become successful in your job. Your salary won’t be enough. Remember your job is not permanent. You need to find your work.

Discover your talents and use them wisely. Your talent is not just for you, but to serve others too. When we use our gifts, the talents that we possess, it brings us a sense of joy. It feels good to recognize that we have a skill or ability that not everyone else has. So, if you want to be happy, DO the things you excel at! Give yourself permission to be good. If you have a beautiful voice, don’t just sing, share your voice with others. If you are a natural leader, find a way to lead. If you are a talented photographer – take the photos!
