A MEMORIAL service for the late National University of Science and Technology (NUST) lecturer, Dr Lawton Hikwa (50), will be held on Wednesday at a local church.

The Nust lecturer, who is also a former commissioner of the Zimbabwe Media Commission, passed away in Bulawayo on Sunday, hours after admission to Mater Dei Hospital following respiratory complications.

In an interview with Sunday News, the Hikwa family spokesperson, Mr Oliver Hikwa said all was in place for the service, which will be opened to members of the public.

“The memorial service will be held at St Jones Anglican church at the corner of Sixth Avenue and George Silundika, starting around 4pm, it will be opened to members of the public.

“For those who will be at the house, transport will be provided to the venue around 3pm and the same transport will be available to ferry them back home,” said Mr Hikwa.

He however could not confirm when the late academic will be cremated, as per his wishes, noting that this would be a process that could even take weeks.

“As for the actual cremation, it will now be open to the nucleus of the family only. We cannot at the moment give a specific day or date because we are informed this is a process that can even drag on for weeks,” said the family spokesperson
Mr Hikwa expressed gratitude to the support they had received after the passing on of Dr Hikwa noting that this showed he was a true man of the people.

“It is not always that people from all walks of life converge just to celebrate the life of one man. Everyone has been extremely comforting during this, our time of mourning, of which as a family we feel quite humbled,” he said.

He could not confirm which high profile individuals were set to grace the memorial service saying that everyone was invited knowing that the academic was a hugely popular in the academic, political and social spheres.

Dr Hikwa is survived by his wife and three children.

Mourners are gathered at Number six Ivegil Road, Morningside.
