ZIMBABWE’S athletes could be headed for greater heights following the donation of a mobile timer by the Germany Embassy.

The timer, used during training would be able to produce precise results on an athlete performance.

The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) received the timer as part of a development partnership that was signed with the Germany Olympic Committee.

NAAZ director of coaching, talent identification and development Pakamile Lisimati said they are ready to use the timer which he believes can bring positive results to the local athletes.

He said the portable device uses sensors to determine various elements during an athlete’s performance that include take off, speed and finish.

Lisimati said the timer would allow the athletes to gauge their performances during training and then adjust accordingly.

“The timer is now ready for use and I’m sure it would be utilised during the next training camp as it will be used for training and talent identification purposes.

“It is of a scientific nature and can tell the time one ran over the first and last 20m in a 100m sprint, it also gauges overall speed and detects a person’s running patterns and produces a printout.

“From the printout, we can then deduce the type of race one is suited to run, the speed of acceleration and finish, which once you know you can improve on among other aspects. It can be used for both running and jumps,” he said adding, its portability means it can be used in any part of the country without any difficulty.

NAAZ signed a four year development partnership with the Germany Olympic Committee early this year and a Germany athletics coach has already held seminars in the country as part of training programmes.

IAAF Level Three coach, Torsten Tesch spent over a month in the country holding several workshops covering talent identification and development, jumps and children athletics.

The jumps seminar, whose subjects included high jump, triple jump and long jump, was a coup for the country as it is only usually held at the IAAF regional centre in Kenya and it is rare to be held for participants from one country.

In an earlier interview, NAAZ president Tendai Tagara said they initiated the cooperation agreement to benefit from Germany’s expertise as one of the top nations in athletics and also to access the European country’s world class training facilities.

“There are also a lot of Germans who are International Association of Athletics Federations instructors and they would be at our disposal. They have some of the best coaches in terms of sports science and areas of biomechanics which I believe will greatly impact on the positive development of our athletics,” he said then.
